MedStart Helps Judge the Winner of Aging 2.0 Global Startup Search in Sacramento.

On June 30th, 2016, MedStart was given the opportunity to judge at the Aging 2.0 Global Startup Search here in the Sacramento area. The event was hosted by Eskaton Village in Carmichael.  Aging 2.0  searches for startups with solutions and services that improve the lives of older adults.  They have helped orchestrate over 250 events with 35 chapters throughout the country.  Robert Groth, VP Program Development and MedStart’s representative for judging commented, “It is exciting to see new solutions to help improve the lives of older adults. We are happy to be involved and offer the wining company a membership in MedStart.”

This year, there were seven startups that presented.  Chris Leader, from Stack Labs won the grand prize for his pitch about lights with sensors embedded in them that enable motion analytics.  Chris commented, “We believe our intelligent lighting system will help older adults both sleep better and fall less.” Stack lights have occupancy sensors built right into each bulb, so they turn on and off automatically by sensing movement.  Stack also intelligently adjusts color temperature to time of day in line with the body’s circadian rhythm, helping peopled to sleep more soundly. Stack also automatically dims and brightens according to the natural light in the room, reducing energy by as much as 40-60%.

The deliberation for the winning company included online voting and judging.  The winning company goes on to a national round of voting and the opportunity to present for the national prize.  Runner up for the event was Hello Nurse, which is a startup that offers a wireless system for nursing homes that detects wetness in briefs, prevents falls, and monitors the repositioning of residents.  In third place was PT Track.  PT Track offers a wearable device for physical therapy to track care plan compliance.  PT Track is a local Sacramento start up that also just won Startup Weekend Health 2.0 in Sacramento CA on April 29th, 2016.
